Frequently Asked Questions

Learn to Skate Programming

What class is right for me?

Beginners ages 3-5 enroll in Snowplow Sam 1. Beginners ages 6-14 enroll in Basic 1. Beginners ages 18+ enroll in Adult 1. If you have taken classes before and aren’t sure, we will help you find the right class on the first day.

My child wants to play hockey. Is this the right program for them?

Yes! Skaters can wear hockey skates or figure skates in Learn to Skate USA class. After mastering the skills in Basic 1 and Basic 2, skaters can transfer to a Learn to Play hockey program or an instructional league but we encourage skaters to continue through the Learn to Skate basic skills program to get the full benefit.

Who can take the adult class?

The adult classes are for beginners and advanced skaters 18 and older (exceptions can be made for 16+ but on an as evaluated basis). You will move through the Adult 1-6 levels at your own pace.

Does every skater need a Learn to Skate USA®️ membership?

Yes. LTSUSA membership is required every year (July 1-June 30). Members receive a welcome packet and magazine and secondary sport accident insurance. Members can participate in lessons, performances and competitions. Register at learntoskateusa.com/registration.

I paid for a LTSUSA membership at another rink. Do I need to pay again?

The membership is paid once during each season, July 1-June 30. If you paid at another club program after July 1, you do not need to pay again here. Always use the same membership number.

What to Wear

Is a helmet required?

We strongly encourage skaters in Snowplow Sam, Basic 1 and Adult 1 to wear a helmet. Make sure the helmet fits and the chin strap is fastened.

What should skaters wear during lessons?

Gloves! A light sweater or jacket. Pants or leggings that you can move in.

What size rental skates?

Little kids wear the same size in skates and shoes. Big kids, teens and adults usually wear skates one size smaller (Shoes 7 = Skates 6). You want a snug fit. Wear one pair of tall thin socks that cover your ankles. Lace skates tightly all the way to the top.

I want to buy my own skates, where should I go?

Talk to a coach before you buy skates. Coaches can help you choose the right size and model, and avoid an expensive mistake. There are skate sellers you can talk to locally or in nearby cities - we have two representatives in our club (see Coaches tab for information). There are also many online sources, once you know the size and model you need.
Size charts: Edea, Jackson, Riedell

How many sessions will there be?

There will be four Learn to Skate sessions at 7 classes per session. More details can be found here.

If I miss a class, may I make it up?

There are NO make up classes built into our sessions and refunds are subject to board discretion.  Similar to other sports and activities, we purchase ice time and employee coaches based on the number of students enrolled.  Therefore, as a general rule, there are no refunds after a session has started.

Can I skate with my child in the practice area during Learn to Skate?

No. Only skaters who are enrolled in a class may skate in the practice area.  This is a class run by the Sycamore Club under USFSA figure skating.  It is not public ice or sessions run under Perry Park.  As such, all adults on the ice need to be USFSA Members who have completed background checks and SafeSkate courses.  We do have authorized Skate Monitors on the ice during the practice sessions that can help young children as needed.  If your skater is uncomfortable on the ice during the practice time without you we recommend you come back during public skate to help them acclimate and feel more comfortable during their class sessions.

When are the public sessions?

Perry Park is responsible for the ice schedule for public sessions.  If you have questions related to these please contact a Perry Park representative or see their monthly calendar posted on their website and FaceBook Site.  Public session Admission will be charged. Rental skates are available.

Beyond Learn to Skate

How do I schedule private lessons?

Visit the Coaches page to see who teaches private lessons or talk directly with your favorite instructor.  There is a contact button where you can submit a request for private lessons where a coach can then reach back out to you for coordination.  Please be patient and understand that coaches have limited available time due to schedules, competitions, other jobs, and ice availability.

Can I skate on the Club Session Ice if I am not a Club Member?

No, in order to use any of the club ice sessions you must be a registered Sycamore Club member or a member of a RECIPROCATING club

How do I buy a Club shirt or jacket?

We are working on an Online Store.  When that is available you'll be able to order via the SHOP link on the homepage (To Come).

Is the Sycamore LTS program part of the Perry Park Programming or Affiliate Hockey Programs Offered at Perry Park?

No. our  Learn to Skate is run by the Sycamore Ice Skating Club of Indianapolis.  You need to register for Learn to Skate classes by filling out the forms located here and returning to LearnToSkateUSA@Sycamoreisc.org.  Payments can be made online.
